Everyone Who Has Health Care Gets Help from the Government

One of the reasons why it so difficult to get anything done is because of  the high level of ignorance that exists among Americans about what government does. Matthew Yglesias at Vox draws our attention to this poll. Start with the elderly, 65 years and older. Only 7 percent say that government subsidizes their health care even though they all use their Medicare card when they go to the doctor. We do not pay the full cost for our healthcare. The government pays a portion of it. What the government pays is called a subsidy. Medicare is the federal government program that provides medical care for the elderly. If you are poor or disabled, Medicaid provides help with your medical bills. Their misunderstanding about who provides Medicare reminds me of these kinds of posters we saw mainly from Tea Party supporters during the debate on Obamacare. So, one more time. If you use Medicare, it is the government that pays for it. Yes, it is true we contribute to Medicare during our working year Read More

Under Obamacare, millions of Americans are receiving affordable health care. However, this could be in jeopardy as today the US Supreme Court began hearing a case that could result in the loss of health care for millions. Here is the problem. The case the Court is hearing is called King v. Burwel. Under Obamacare, Americans can purchase health insurance through online marketplaces called insurance exchanges. These are kind of similar to the way in which you purchase airline tickets online. These exchanges are set up both by the federal and state governments. When you make a purchase, the system tells you if you are entitled to a subsidy which reduces the cost of the insurance considerably for many people. Without the subsidy, many Americans simply couldn’t afford the insurance. When the law was passed, it gave the states a clear choice: they could run their own exchanges or have the federal government runs it for them. Because the people who wrote the Affordable Care Act expect Read More

Earlier this year, the United States Supreme Court allowed owners of certain businesses not to provide contraceptive coverage to their employees if, in doing so, violates their religious belief. The Affordable Care Act or Obamacare as it is called, required employers to provide contraceptive as part of their medical coverage for their employees. Now the law is once again going back to the Supreme Court mainly because of a typographical error. Actually, the problem could easily be fixed by simply adding just three words. But the fact that this case is going all the way to the Supreme Court is an indication of just how dysfunctional the American political system has become. In any sane system all it would take to fix the problem is for Congress to add these three  extra words. Yet, because of this tiny error, millions of Americans who now have health care, many of them for the first time, could lose it. Here is the problem. The case the Court will hear is called King v. Burwel. Under O Read More

Obamacare is once again going to the United States Supreme Court.  In June 2012, the Court ruled that the Affordable Care Act did not violate the Constitution. This time a corporation is asking the Court to rule that the ACA violates its constitutional right to freedom of religion. The ACA requires that employers with 50 or more employees to provide contraceptive coverage in their insurance plans. Earlier, religious organizations, such as the Catholic Church, argued it was wrong for the government to force them to provide such coverage since contraceptive use is against their religious beliefs. Consequently, President Obama carved out an exception for religious and non-profit groups. But now, a secular, for-profit corporation is demanding that right as well. Hobby Lobby, a huge corporation with almost 600 stores across the country, is owned by a deeply religious couple who do not agree with the use of certain types of contraceptives, especially the morning-after pill. They argued tha Read More

The Republicans in Congress have shut down the federal government because of their hatred for the new health care law – the Affordable Health Care Act, better known as Obamacare. I have written on several occasions about how horrible our health care system is. See here, here, here and here. Our health care service remains the most expensive in the world. The United States spends more on health care than any other rich country without getting better outcomes.  It is true we do have some of the best doctors, hospitals, medical procedures etc. But overall, our health care system delivers poor results. According to the The Journal of the American Medical Association : • People in the United States experience higher rates of disease and injury and die earlier than people in other high-income countries. • US males and females in almost all age groups—up to age 75 years—have shorter life expectancies than their counterparts in 16 other wealthy, developed nations: Australia, Austr Read More
