The Daily Show Explains Why Federal Judge Strikes Down NYPD Stop & Frisk Policy as Unconstitutional!

On Monday, Judge Shira Scheindlin of Federal District Court in New York declared New York City’s stop and frisk policy to be unconstitutional. She declared that the program violated the constitutional rights of minorities. I have written about the program here and here. The NY Times editorial: She found that the city had been “deliberately indifferent” to police officers illegally detaining and frisking minority residents on the streets over many years. Judge Scheindlin was clearly speaking of Mayor Michael Bloomberg when she concluded: “The City’s highest officials have turned a blind eye to the evidence that officers are conducting stops in a racially discriminatory manner. In their zeal to defend a policy that they believe to be effective, they have willfully ignored overwhelming proof that the policy of singling out “the right people” is racially discriminatory and therefore violates the United States Constitution.” The entire editorial is worth reading. Mayor Bloomberg says NYPD Stops White People Too Much

In defending New York City’s controversial policy of stop and frisk by the NYPD, Mayor Bloomberg said last Friday that the police disproportionately stopped too many white people. “Stop and frisk “ is a policy by which  New York City police officers stop people they deem suspicious, to question them and, if there is adequate reason to suspect illegal activities, to pat them down for things like drugs and weapons. According to the Mayor: “One newspaper and one news service, they just keep saying, ‘Oh, it’s a disproportionate percentage of a particular ethnic group.’ That may be.
