As many of you maybe aware, recently the International Olympic Committee decided to drop wrestling from the Olympics. Both Iran and the United States are huge competitors in this sport. Both countries have now teamed up to fight the ban. The wrestling authorities and athletes from the United States and Iran may have accomplished what so many years of diplomacy have failed to achieve. The International Olympic Committee announced on February that wrestling will be excluded from its list of core sports. In a rare alliance the US and Iran have joined forces to keep wrestling into Olympic Games’ program. At the start of the Wrestling World Cup, hosted in Tehran from February 21-22, American and Iranian athletes held hands and smiled to the crowd while standing behind a long banned that read: “Olympics without wrestling! never never” in both English and Farsi. “We need the backing of Iran and Russia… to preserve wrestling, and this goes beyond politics… Iran is one of the power Read More

At his press conference on Tuesday, President Obama warned the war hawks, both here and in Isreal, about the dangers and consequences of making war on Iran. “At this stage, it is my belief that we have a window of opportunity where this can still be resolved diplomatically. That’s not just my view — that’s the view of our top intelligence officials, it’s the view of top Israeli intelligence officials. And as a consequence, we are going to continue to apply the pressure, even as we provide a door for the Iranian regime to walk through, where they could rejoin the community of nations, by giving assurances to the international community that they are meeting their obligations and they are not pursuing a nuclear weapon. That’s my track record. Now, what’s said on the campaign trail, you know, those folks don’t have a lot of responsibilities. They’re not commander in chief. And when I see the casualness with which some of these folks talk about war, I’m reminded of Read More

UPdate Below – Sat. 2/25/12 As tension increases between the United States and Israel on one hand and Iran on the other, it’s quite likely we might soon be headed for another war in the Middle East. According to this recent  CNN/ Gallup poll, nearly three quarters of Americans believe that Iran already has a nuclear weapon. This is not true. Iran does not have nuclear weapons. But why would so many people believe Iran has nuclear weapons? Part of the reason is that the mainstream media is once again beating the drums for war with scary headlines about Iran just as they did prior to the invasion of Iraq 2003. Read this. You can also take a trip down memory lane by looking at this. We have just ended one war – the Iraqi War – which was waged at enormous cost to the nation, both in blood and treasure. This chart from the Congressional Budget Office gives us an idea of the colossal waste of money on that war. But the final cost of the war for the American people in Read More

Some strange things have been happening in Iran over the past few weeks which suggest that the United States has already started a covert, secret war against Iran. It appears that we have gone beyond just talking about military action to actually engaging in it, albeit at a low level. In addition to waging cyberwar via Stuxnet, the United States and/or Israel appear to be engaged in covert efforts to blow up Iranian facilities and murder Iranian scientists. Earlier this week, the CIA lost a reconnaissance drone over Iranian territory (whether Iran shot it down or not is disputed). Stephen Walt, Professor at Harvard University takes a look at the situation. First, as I’ve already argued elsewhere, our preoccupation with Iran vastly overstates its capabilities and the actual threat it poses to U.S. interests. Iran is a minor military power at present, and it has no meaningful power projection capabilities. It has been pursuing some sort of nuclear capability for decades without get Read More
