Everyone Who Has Health Care Gets Help from the Government

One of the reasons why it so difficult to get anything done is because of  the high level of ignorance that exists among Americans about what government does. Matthew Yglesias at Vox draws our attention to this poll. Start with the elderly, 65 years and older. Only 7 percent say that government subsidizes their health care even though they all use their Medicare card when they go to the doctor. We do not pay the full cost for our healthcare. The government pays a portion of it. What the government pays is called a subsidy. Medicare is the federal government program that provides medical care for the elderly. If you are poor or disabled, Medicaid provides help with your medical bills. Their misunderstanding about who provides Medicare reminds me of these kinds of posters we saw mainly from Tea Party supporters during the debate on Obamacare. So, one more time. If you use Medicare, it is the government that pays for it. Yes, it is true we contribute to Medicare during our working year Read More

The US Supreme Court could take health care away from millions of Americans

Under Obamacare, millions of Americans are receiving affordable health care. However, this could be in jeopardy as today the US Supreme Court began hearing a case that could result in the loss of health care for millions. Here is the problem. The case the Court is hearing is called King v. Burwel. Under Obamacare, Americans can purchase health insurance through online marketplaces called insurance exchanges. These are kind of similar to the way in which you purchase airline tickets online. These exchanges are set up both by the federal and state governments. When you make a purchase, the system tells you if you are entitled to a subsidy which reduces the cost of the insurance considerably for many people. Without the subsidy, many Americans simply couldn’t afford the insurance. When the law was passed, it gave the states a clear choice: they could run their own exchanges or have the federal government runs it for them. Because the people who wrote the Affordable Care Act expect Read More

The food stamp program provides an invaluable service to low income Americans. There is a perception in the country that most of the people who used food stamps are African Americans and other minorities and because of this many people opposed it. But this is not true. The majority of people receiving food stamps are actually white. Here is a Republican member of the Mississippi state legislature,  Gene Alday: “I come from a town where all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call ‘welfare crazy checks,'” Alday said to a reporter for The Clarion-Ledger, a Mississippi newspaper, earlier this month. “They don’t work.” The official name for the food stamp program is SNAP – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. According to 2013 data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the program, 40.2 percent of SNAP recipients are white, 25.7 percent are black, 10.3 percent are Hispanic, 2.1 percent are Asian and 1.2 percent Read More

No, Winter Storms Do Not Disprove the Science of Global Warming.

Whenever you have a snow storm such as the one today, there are those who question whether global warming is real. Some do so sincerely because they don’t understand the science. Here is a basic explanation. However, there are the denialists – those who outright reject the very idea that human activities are altering the global climate in ways that are having serious consequences for the world. Yes, it is true that you cannot pin any particular weather event, such as today’s storm,  on climate change. However, these events fit the pattern scientists believe is likely to happen as the earth’s climate gets warmer. The World Meteorological Organization now says 2014 was the hottest year on record since 1880 as shown in this chart. For denialists, science and data are inconvenient facts.  Here is the classic example. One of the mistakes Trump and others make is that they confuse weather with climate. Weather is the conditions that exist in the atmosphere from day-to-day. It flu Read More

Why are Muslims so angry about cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad?

Over the last few years, the publication of images of the Prophet Mohammad has angered many Muslims and caused violent outbursts. The terrorists who killed twelve journalists from the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo last week cited the publication of cartoons mocking Mohammad as the reason for the attack. They said they found such images to be insulting and offensive to the Prophet. Of course, you don’t attack and kill people simply because they offend you. The question many people are asking is this: Why are Muslims so angry over the publication of cartoons of their prophet? Generally, Muslims are opposed to images of Mohammad and other prophets because of fear that they could lead to idolatry. They worry that statues or images of the prophet could be used as idols and that people might call upon them to intercede with God which would be against religious law. In the eyes of many Muslims this is blasphemy – the act of showing insult or disrespect to God and religion. Does the Koran Read More

Dean Obeidallah, in his regular column for the Daily Beast yesterday, writes that more and more Muslims are joining Christians in celebrating Christmas. As many of you may be aware, Jesus is an important figure for Muslims as well. Here is the Koran: ‘The angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed God gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, who will be a man of honor in this life and the life to come, and who will be one of the ones nearest to God.” Muslims considered Jesus to be a great prophet. In Arabic, Jesus is known as Isa. Muslims considered the birth of Jesus to be an important event worthy of celebration. Jesus’ mother, Mary, is highly revered by Muslims; she is called ‘Miriam” in the Koran. Like Christians, Muslims believe that Jesus will return to earth on Judgment Day Of course, as Obeidallah points out  (he is Muslim and his wife a Christian) there are important theological differences  between Muslims and Christia Read More

Dear friends, A few days ago President Obama issued orders that will prevent close to 5 million undocumented immigrants from being deported. This is a fitting tribute to Thanksgiving. Many of us don’t see the link between Thanksgiving and immigration but the holiday is pretty much about immigrants too. The founding of the country is traced to the Pilgrims and Puritans who came here in the early 1600s. They were immigrants. They came here without invitations and they had no family ties to the land that later came to be called the United States. Nevertheless, Native Americans welcomed them, fed them when they were hungry and taught them how to grow crops. Later, these newcomers sat with the Natives and together they gave thanks for the difficult times they experienced. This became our first Thanksgiving. Since then, America opened her arms in welcoming millions of Americans from every part of the world. I know because my family is one of the millions who came. Every wave of immigrants Read More

America’s Undocumented Immigrants – Who Are They?

Tonight President Obama will address the nation on his plans to deal with the undocumented immigrant population currently living in the United States. The president has said from the beginning that he would like to find a way to allow many of these immigrants to live and work legally in the country. In June 2013, the US Senate passed a bill that would have given most undocumented immigrants a pathway to become legal permanent residents and eventually, citizens. However, the Republicans who controlled the House of Representatives never took up the bill and so it died. Living here illegally means that these immigrants constantly face the threat of deportation so the President is expected to issue an executive order that will temporarily prevent many of them from been deported.  We will have to wait for the speech to find out exactly how many will benefit from the president’s action. In the meantime, for those who are interested, here are a few basic facts you should know. 1. How many Read More
