Red States Ripping Off Blue States

Republicans and their Tea Party followers like to rail against government spending. They constantly call for cuts in various social programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and other forms of help offered by the federal government. At times, they make it sound as if Democrats are doling out these kinds of assistance to their supporters.

The Washington Post Ezra Klein points to this map that shows an interesting take on the issue.

The red states indicate the ones that get back more federal tax dollars than they actually paid. The blue states get back less than they paid.

So, it seems that the red states are indeed getting a good deal since they are being subsidized by taxpayers in the blue states.

This then begs the question: why is it that people in the red states keep on electing people who want to cut the very programs that help them the most.

You see the same dynamics in health care – almost all the states that rejected Obamacare are in in the South – the region with the highest numbers of people without health insurance.

My friend Gary Cohn shared this image that might help answer the question I posed above.
