Florida Governor Signs Law That Blocks Workers from Getting Paid Sick Leave

I have written before about the fact that the United States practices the worst form of capitalism in which workers are seen as little more than instruments for producing profits. Many businesses care little about the rights and well-being of their employees.

The United States is the only rich nation that does not guarantee paid vacations or holidays to workers.

It is also the only rich country that does not guarantee paid maternity leave to women.

Now, there is news coming out of Florida that the Governor of that state, Rick Scott, has signed legislation blocking local governments from requiring businesses to provide paid sick leave for its employees.  The law was pushed by companies such as Walt Disney, Darden Restaurants, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and a broad array of powerful business interests.

Polls have shown that most Americans support paying sick leave to workers when they become ill. One should not even need polls to tell us that this is the common decent thing to do when your employees are sick.

But Florida is not alone. Similar laws have been passed in Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kansas and Wisconsin. Other states such Michigan, Indiana and Alabama are considering passing these laws as well.

The U.S. is an outlier among most developed countries in its lack of guaranteed sick time for workers. According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics,nearly 40 percent of private-sector U.S. workers receive no sick leave at all, many of them in lower-wage industries like restaurants and retail. When these workers or their children get sick, they face an unpleasant choice: Clock in anyway, or lose a day’s wages.

As mentioned above, Americans are not guaranteed paid vacations and holidays. Here is nice looking chart which captures this ugly fact by comparing us with other nations.
