The fascination with guns is not uniquely American. Many countries are buying lots of guns. What I find interesting is the extent to which the United States is contributing to the proliferation of weapons throughout the world. Professor Juan Cole points us to two charts which are revealing.

The first one is from the New York Times which states that weapons sales by the United States tripled in 2011 to a record high. Overseas weapons sales by the United States totaled $66.3 billion last year, or more than three-quarters of the global arms market, valued at $85.3 billion in 2011. Russia was a distant second, with $4.8 billion in deals.

The second chart is from the Congressional Budget Office which shows US arms sales to the Middle East which dwarfs all other suppliers.
