The Stupidity of Gun Rights Laws

In my recent post on the menace guns create in our society, I pointed out how the gun lobby opposed any sensible law that would curb gun violence. But they do more than that; they work to pass laws that end up endangering the public. Florida has some of the craziest gun laws. I mentioned the Stand Your Ground Law and another which punished doctors for asking patients with children if they have guns in the home.

Here’s another one. The Republicans will hold their presidential convention in August in Tampa. The City Council in Tampa , quite sensibly, wants to take every precaution  to provide for the security of the thousands of people who will be there for the convention. The council wants to set up a “Clean Zone’ around the convention area and much of the city. It will temporarily ban people from carrying things such as pieces of wood, hard tubes or anything else that could be used as a club, as well as water guns, super soakers, or air guns.

The ban also includes actual guns – you know, the ones that can actually shoot and kill people. But guess what? The ban on guns is illegal. Florida has a law that makes it illegal for any local government to prevent anyone with a concealed weapon license from carrying their guns with them. According to the Tampa Bay Times:

“Enacted last year, the state law allows judgments of up to $100,000 against local governments that enforce local gun ordinances. It also says local officials could be removed from office and fined $5,000, with no representation from the city or county attorney.’

So, during the convention it will be illegal to carry water guns but not real guns. Truly amazing.
