Many states have now legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use including Colorado and Washington State. But surprisingly, the state in which residents smoke the most marijuana is tiny Rhode Island. According to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health, just over 1 in 8 Rhode Island residents over age 12 smoke marijuana monthly. This is more than three times the rate in Kansas, where only 4 percent of residents regularly indulge. What is not surprising is that young people , 18- to 25-year-old,  use marijuana the most. Nearly 19 percent of that group has used marijuana in the past month. The Vox has two interesting charts that display how the war on drugs has disproportionately affected minorities than white Americans. Whites and Blacks used drugs at almost the same rate.   But blacks are sent to prison for using drugs at a much higher rate. For the past 30 years, America has been waging a war on illegal drugs with little or no success. Hundreds of thousands of people have gone to jail for smoking marijuana which remains illegal in most states. Both federal and state governments spend millions of dollars each year on the drug war. But here is the thing: the three deadliest drugs in America are all legal. About 480,000 Americans died every year from illnesses that are related to tobacco smoking. That’s over 1,300 people every single day. Alcohol is one of the most deadly drugs on the road. Alcohol caused over 100,000 traffic deaths each year. In addition, about 26,000 people died annually from the detrimental effects of alcohol consumption. A new Pew survey out earlier this week provides yet another illustration of the failure of America’s drug war. By a nearly five-to-one margin, Americans agree that alcohol is worse for you than marijuana. The poll also finds that two-thirds of Americans believe that the government should focus more on drug treatment for people who use illegal drugs that throwing them in jail. I have always found it perplexing that the federal government regards marijuana as one of the most dangerous drugs consumed by Americans yet that label is not applied to alcohol. According to the Center for Disease Control, alcohol is responsible for about 88,000 deaths each year, making it one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The CDC also states that excessive drinking causes  1.2 million emergency room visits and 2.7 million physician office visits due to excessive drinking. Just finished reading this new massive report by the ACLU entitled “The War on Marijuana – In Black and White. The report confirms something that many of us have long been aware of. Even though Blacks used marijuana about the same rate as Whites, Blacks are arrested for marijuana possession at a much higher rate. From the report: “The war on marijuana has largely been a war on people of color. Despite the fact that marijuana is used at comparable rates by whites and Blacks, state and local governments have aggressively enforced marijuana laws selectively against Black people and communities. In 2010, the Black arrest rate for marijuana possession was 716 per 100,000, while the white arrest rate was 192 per 100,000. Stated another way, a Black person was 3.73 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than a white person — a disparity that increased 32.7% between 2001 and 2010. It is not surprising that the War on Marijuana, waged with far less fanfare than the ea Read More

80 Percent of Illegal Drugs Coming Over the Border Involves American Citizens, Not Immigrants.

Many anti-immigrant proponents claimed that most immigrants coming across the US-Mexican border are drug dealers. Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona: “I believe today, under the circumstances that we’re facing, that the majority of the illegal trespassers that are coming into the state of Arizona are under the direction and control of organized drug cartels and they are bringing drugs in,” In their news releases, U.S. Customs and Border Protection often give the impression that Mexicans are responsible for most of the illegal drugs coming in the US from across the border. However, according to a new report, this is not the case. The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR), found that three out of four people arrested with drugs along the U.S.-Mexico border were U.S. citizens. The center also found that four of every five busts — 80 percent — involved at least one U.S. citizen. Both the President and Congress are now negotiating immigration reforms and both ar Read More
