Everyone Who Has Health Care Gets Help from the Government

One of the reasons why it so difficult to get anything done is because of  the high level of ignorance that exists among Americans about what government does. Matthew Yglesias at Vox draws our attention to this poll. Start with the elderly, 65 years and older. Only 7 percent say that government subsidizes their health care even though they all use their Medicare card when they go to the doctor. We do not pay the full cost for our healthcare. The government pays a portion of it. What the government pays is called a subsidy. Medicare is the federal government program that provides medical care for the elderly. If you are poor or disabled, Medicaid provides help with your medical bills. Their misunderstanding about who provides Medicare reminds me of these kinds of posters we saw mainly from Tea Party supporters during the debate on Obamacare. So, one more time. If you use Medicare, it is the government that pays for it. Yes, it is true we contribute to Medicare during our working year Read More

The US Supreme Court could take health care away from millions of Americans

Under Obamacare, millions of Americans are receiving affordable health care. However, this could be in jeopardy as today the US Supreme Court began hearing a case that could result in the loss of health care for millions. Here is the problem. The case the Court is hearing is called King v. Burwel. Under Obamacare, Americans can purchase health insurance through online marketplaces called insurance exchanges. These are kind of similar to the way in which you purchase airline tickets online. These exchanges are set up both by the federal and state governments. When you make a purchase, the system tells you if you are entitled to a subsidy which reduces the cost of the insurance considerably for many people. Without the subsidy, many Americans simply couldn’t afford the insurance. When the law was passed, it gave the states a clear choice: they could run their own exchanges or have the federal government runs it for them. Because the people who wrote the Affordable Care Act expect Read More

Obamacare goes to the US Supreme Court once again; this time because of a Typo

Earlier this year, the United States Supreme Court allowed owners of certain businesses not to provide contraceptive coverage to their employees if, in doing so, violates their religious belief. The Affordable Care Act or Obamacare as it is called, required employers to provide contraceptive as part of their medical coverage for their employees. Now the law is once again going back to the Supreme Court mainly because of a typographical error. Actually, the problem could easily be fixed by simply adding just three words. But the fact that this case is going all the way to the Supreme Court is an indication of just how dysfunctional the American political system has become. In any sane system all it would take to fix the problem is for Congress to add these three  extra words. Yet, because of this tiny error, millions of Americans who now have health care, many of them for the first time, could lose it. Here is the problem. The case the Court will hear is called King v. Burwel. Under O Read More

Tobacco companies making cigarettes deadlier than ever

The Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids has issued a new report on how tobacco companies have made cigarettes deadlier than ever. The cigarettes sold today are quite different from the cigarettes that were on the market five decades ago, according to the new report, and that’s because tobacco companies have done extensive research to figure out how to make smoking appealing for new customers. They’ve essentially made it easier to get hooked on their products by increasing the levels of nicotine — the addictive chemical in cigarettes — and using new additives to help enhance nicotine’s impact. They’ve also added flavoring, sugars, and menthol to mask the effect of inhaling smoke, ultimately hoping that will make it more pleasurable to use cigarettes. The campaign provides this handy chart that shows how tobacco companies have manipulated the product to make it more addictive. This video is hilarious. If you ever had the experience of wanting to get a medical procedure done and would like to know what it cost, then you will appreciate this video. One of the big problems with the American health care system is that the prices vary widely for the same procedure among doctors and hospitals. The video tries to explain the absurdities of the health care system by asking why if air travel was run like health care. Where Does Our Food Come From?

Where does our food come from? Often the answer is Tyson Foods, America’s meat factory. Tyson, one of the nation’s 100 biggest companies, slaughters 135,000 head of cattle a week, along with 391,000 hogs and an astonishing 41 million chickens. Nearly all Americans regularly eat Tyson meat — at home, at McDonalds, at a cafeteria, at a nursing home. A few days ago, New York Times columnist, Nicholas Kristof, wrote about the factory farm system that produces most of the foods Americans eat today and it is not pretty. He wrote that the system has been  catastrophe for animals. Chickens are bred to grow huge breasts so that as adults they topple forward and can barely breathe or stand. Besides, . . .  factory farming endangers our health. Robert Martin of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health notes that a farm with 10,000 hogs produces as much fecal waste as a small city with 40,000 people, but the hog operation won’t have a waste treatment plant. Indeed, the ho Read More

Do Not Pee in the Pool – It’s Bad For Your Health

The LA Times: One in five Americans has admitted to peeing in a public swimming pool, according to a new survey. That’s 20% of Americans urinating where others swim. Besides being disgusting, peeing in the pool may be seriously harmful to your health. In a new study, researchers from China Agricultural University and Purdue University looked at what happened when uric acid, a byproduct of urine, and chlorine combined. The group found dangerous chemical reactions were a result of this unholy union. The combo kicks up cyanogen chloride, a gas that can harm the central nervous system, heart and lungs if inhaled. Uric acid is linked to 24% to 68% of this byproduct in pool water, the scientists said. And you can chalk up 3% to 4% of the harmful byproduct trichloramine in pool water to uric acid. Nitrogen trichloramine (NC13) is a poisonous gas that can cause acute lung injury. The buildup of this gas can be so quick and so severe that researchers studying a national swimming competit Read More

Anti-Vaccine Propaganda can have dangerous consequences

Vaccinations are important to prevent the spread of dangerous diseases. Many of the diseases that once killed and crippled millions of people around the world are now eradicated thanks to the widespread use of vaccinations. However, just as there are people in the United States who deny the science of global warming, there is a growing anti-vaccination crowd who refused to get their children immunized because they believe that these shots can cause autism and other serious problems. Here is Donald Trump, also one the most vocal deniers of global warming. But the science is cleared – vaccines don’t cause autism. The New York Times: “Yet another panel of scientists has found no evidence that a popular vaccine causes autism. But despite the scientists’ best efforts, their report is unlikely to have any impact on the frustrating debate about the safety of these crucial medicines.” Even small numbers of people who are not vaccinated can have serious consequences. The Centers for D Read More
