Florida Has Never Executed A White Person For Killing A Black Person

I am against the death penalty mainly for two reasons. First, too many innocent people have been sentenced to death in the past. Since 1973, over 140 people have been released from death row after their innocence was later proven. Besides, as long as the death penalty exists there is always the possibility that innocent people will be executed. Secondly, the death penalty is racist. In the states that have the death penalty, blacks are more likely to be put to the death for killing whites than vice versa. Here is more evidence to support my claim. According to Think Progress, Florida has executed 84 people since the Supreme Court reinstated the  death penalty in 1976. “Zero of them are white people sentenced to death for killing an African American. Indeed, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, “no white person has ever been executed for killing an African American” in the state of Florida. Nor is Florida particularly unusual in the racial impact of its death pe Read More

President Obama: “Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,”

Recently I pointed to the racial bias in marijuana arrests.  Basically we have a system where marijuana is practically legal for the wealthy and white and illegal for everyone else. While black people and white people use marijuana at the same rate, black people are much more likely to be arrested for possessing it. Here is the evidence. Today, the New Yorker published an interview with the president in which he said: “I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life,” Obama told reporter David Remnick. “I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.” In fact, the president went on to admit pot was actually less dangerous “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.” Obama also dived into the vastly disproportionate effect marijuana arrests and incarcerations have on non-white Americans. “Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for sm Read More

Yesterday I wrote that we now basically have a system in which marijuana is practically legal for the wealthy and white and illegal for everyone else. I also pointed out that although black people and white people use marijuana at the same rate, black people are much more likely to be arrested for possessing it. Last night, MSNBC host, Chris Hayes, provides further proof to that claim. Please watch. Twitter: @Levianthony123 FollowShare Share this:EmailTweetShare on TumblrPrintMoreLike this:Like Loading... Smoking Marijuana – OK for Elites but Illegal for Others

Yesterday Colorado became the first state to legalize the sale of marijuana to residents for recreational use. Washington State is set to do as well in a few months and other states might follow. There is quite a bit of genuine concern being expressed about the possible negative consequences of this measure. It might cause health risks and encourage more people to use the drug. However, as Adam Serwer points out, there doesn’t’ seem to be much concern about the consequences of our current drug policies that turned millions of Americans, especially young black men, into criminals simple for possessing and/or using marijuana. Our last three presidents – Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, all admitted to smoking weed at one time another and all three presided over a system that imposed harsh punishment for marijuana use. This morning two respected journalists, David Brooks and Ruth Marcus admitted to smoking marijuana as well during their youth, and like the three pr Read More

No, Crime Is Not Going to Start Soaring Under Bill de Blasio

I voted for Bill de Blasio mainly because of some of the things he said during the campaign, especially his attacks on the growing income inequality in the City that has increased significantly over the past 12 years under the Bloomberg administration.  See here. I don’t know if Mr. De Blasio will keep his promise to deal with this problem but if he begins to act in the interest of those at the top I will not hesitate to criticize him. That said, I am a little amused  by the dire warnings  of some of his opponents that the city will see increase crime rates over the next four years. Here for example is the Economist warning the mayor-elect that he better not screw up: New York has been well run for 20 years. It used to be one of America’s most dangerous big cities; now it is one of the safest. Crime has fallen faster in the Big Apple than elsewhere, thanks to police reforms begun by Rudy Giuliani (the mayor from 1994 to 2001) and continued by Mike Bloomberg, his successor. Yes, Read More

The Daily Show Explains Why Federal Judge Strikes Down NYPD Stop & Frisk Policy as Unconstitutional!

On Monday, Judge Shira Scheindlin of Federal District Court in New York declared New York City’s stop and frisk policy to be unconstitutional. She declared that the program violated the constitutional rights of minorities. I have written about the program here and here. The NY Times editorial: She found that the city had been “deliberately indifferent” to police officers illegally detaining and frisking minority residents on the streets over many years. Judge Scheindlin was clearly speaking of Mayor Michael Bloomberg when she concluded: “The City’s highest officials have turned a blind eye to the evidence that officers are conducting stops in a racially discriminatory manner. In their zeal to defend a policy that they believe to be effective, they have willfully ignored overwhelming proof that the policy of singling out “the right people” is racially discriminatory and therefore violates the United States Constitution.” The entire editorial is worth reading. What It Means To Be Black In America Today!

President Obama speaking about the death of Trayvon Martin today:  “There are very few African-American men in this country who haven’t had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store,” Obama said. “That includes me. And there are very few African-American men who haven’t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me, at least before I was a senator.” The African-American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws,” Obama said, “everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws. And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case.” Here is the reality of what the President means. 1. New York City Stop and Frisk policy. This is the name of the policy under which  New York City police officers stop people they deem suspicious, to question them and, if Read More

More On The Zimmerman Verdict

Just want to add this update to my earlier post today. According to this Mother Jones report, even though George Zimmerman was found not guilty, his troubles are not over just yet. Now that the verdict is in, here’s what could happen next. Federal charges: The Department of Justice launched an investigation last March to investigate whether Martin’s shooting amounted to a federal hate crime—that is, if Zimmerman followed and killed Martin because he was black. In July 2012, the FBI released a statement saying that investigators had found no evidence that Zimmerman was motivated by racism. The July statement indicates that federal charges are highly unlikely, but the DOJ has not announced that the case is closed. It’s still being brought up as a post-trial possibility. NAACP president Benjamin Jealous, for instance, said Saturday on MSNBC that “there are still additional legal avenues. He could still be charged with federal civil rights charges.” Civil lawsuit: Read More
