Yesterday, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) took an historic vote to recognize gay marriage. The Church’s constitution traditionally recognizes marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The church kept the original definition of marriage but also defines marriage “as a unique commitment between two people.” Over the past several years other religious groups have recognized same-sex marriages. These include the Reform and Conservative Jewish movements, the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ. However, some of the largest religious institutions have remained firmly against allowing same-sex marriage, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Jewish movement and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as the Southern Baptist Convention and other evangelical Protestant denominations. Here is a nice chart from the Pew Research Center showing where the major religions now stand on gay marriage. And this map tells us the c Read More

Why are Muslims so angry about cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad?

Over the last few years, the publication of images of the Prophet Mohammad has angered many Muslims and caused violent outbursts. The terrorists who killed twelve journalists from the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo last week cited the publication of cartoons mocking Mohammad as the reason for the attack. They said they found such images to be insulting and offensive to the Prophet. Of course, you don’t attack and kill people simply because they offend you. The question many people are asking is this: Why are Muslims so angry over the publication of cartoons of their prophet? Generally, Muslims are opposed to images of Mohammad and other prophets because of fear that they could lead to idolatry. They worry that statues or images of the prophet could be used as idols and that people might call upon them to intercede with God which would be against religious law. In the eyes of many Muslims this is blasphemy – the act of showing insult or disrespect to God and religion. Does the Koran Read More

The Turkish President Says Muslims “Discover” America

First of all, no one “discover” America. You can’t discover some place where millions of people already lived. At the time of Columbus’ arrival in 1492, the American continent was populated with millions of Native Americans. Addressing Muslim leaders at a conference last Saturday, the president of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, said that Muslim explorers discovered the Americas three centuries before Columbus. Erdogan said “I want you to pay attention here, the meeting of the Latin America with Islam goes back to the 12th century.” He added that “Muslim sailors reached the Land of America in 1178, 314 years before Columbus.” In making the claim, President Erdogan cited the controversial research carried out by Turkish scholar Youssef Mroueh. To support the claim that Muslims came to America before Columbus, Mroueh pointed to an entry in Columbus’s diary about a mosque in Cuba. Mroueh wrote that “Columbus admitted in his papers that on Monday, October 21, 1492 CE while his Read More

Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, who won the Nobel Peace Prize — and was shot in the head by the Taliban — for advocating girls’ education, told President Barack Obama he could “change the world” if only he’d send books instead of guns to other countries, she said Tuesday. “My message was very simple,” Malala, who is now 17, said Tuesday at the Forbes Under 30 Summit in Philadelphia, speaking of her recent meeting with the president. “I said instead of sending guns, send books. Instead of sending weapons, send teachers.” Asked by the host, Ronan Farrow of MSNBC, how Obama reacted, she said simply that his response was “pretty political.” Twitter:@Levianthony123 FollowShare Share this:EmailTweetShare on TumblrPrintMoreLike this:Like Loading... In the areas they controlled in Iraq, ISIS, the Sunni extremist group, has issued new instructions to schools.  Under the new rules, all classes and instruction should be conducted according to Sharia laws, a Muslim religious code. Under the new rules ▪ Male and female students must be separated; they cannot be taught in the same classroom. ▪ The teaching of evolution is to be removed from textbooks ▪ Anything that encourages patriotism –like the phrase, “Republic of Iraq” – is banned. ▪ The teaching of subjects such as art, music, philosophy and social studies are banned Also banned are geography, history and literature lessons as well as any teaching about Christianity. However, physics, chemistry, mathematics, Arabic and English will continue to be taught. ▪ In science books, any reference to Darwinism or to natural evolution is to be deleted. This would be replaced by sentences that made it clear that God was the creator of everything. Watch: Twitter:@Levianthon Read More

White House Official says Saudi Arabia has Extensive Border with Syria – Wrong.

The lack of geographical knowledge among Americans is legendary. Three years after the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, two-thirds of Americans aged 18 to 24 still could not find Iraq on a map. However, it is reasonable to expect that this level of ignorance did not extend to high officials of the US government. President Obama has declared war on the terrorist group ISIS which now controlled territory in Iraq and Syria. Just before the president made his speech last week a senior administration official met with reporters. During the meeting he was reported to have remarked that the US was having discussion with Saudi Arabia on the threat posed by ISIS because that country “has an extensive border with Syria.” The problem is that it doesn’t. You can see from this map that Syria shares borders with Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Turkey but not Saudi Arabia. Worldwide, more than eight-in-ten people identify with a religious group. A comprehensive demographic study of more than 230 countries and territories conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life estimates that there are almost 6 billion religiously affiliated adults and children around the globe. This represents 84% of the 2010 world population of approximately 7 billion. Christianity is still the largest religion – 32% of the world’s population or 2.2 billion followers. Half of all Christians are Catholics. But Islam is growing fast – 23% or 1.6 billion Muslims. An interesting part of the data is the growth of “Unaffiliated,” those who are not connected to any religion at all. They are the third largest group behind Christians and Muslims.  Surveys indicate that many of the unaffiliated hold some religious or spiritual beliefs (such as belief in God or a universal spirit) even though they do not identify with a particular faith Here is the b Read More

Saudi Arabia, one of the most conservative Muslim countries in the Middle East, practices a barbaric form of oppression against women by preventing them from driving. Islamic laws do not ban women from driving and women in other Muslim countries do drive. Saudi leaders are afraid that if they give women the right the drive then soon they will be demanding other rights as well. Recently, a group of women was planning a protest against the ban but cancelled it at the last moment after they were threatened with punishment. In supporting the women, Saudi artist and social activist, Hisham Fageeh’s, turned to late Jamaican reggae superstar,  Bob Marley, for inspiration. Watch: Here is a report on the protest. More on that Amazing Little Girl from Pakistan – Malala Yousafzai.

Earlier this year I wrote about an amazing 16 year-old girl from Pakistan – Malala Yousafzai. See here. She was shot in her head by a member of the extremist Pakistani Taliban simply because she fights for young girls to be educated. Because of her courage, she was nominated for what is perhaps the most prestigious award in the world – the Nobel Peace Prize. This week, she did not win the prize but still holds the record for the youngest person ever to be nominated for that prize. However, she did win the European Parliament’s prestigious Sakharov human rights prize. Over the last few days she has been on a world-wide media tour where she is lauded for her work. Here is meets with President Obama and his family. Here is on interesting note on that meeting. According to McClatchy news, Malala told the president that his policy of fighting terrorism in Pakistan is wrong and is not working and instead breeding more terrorists. “I thanked President Obama for the United Read More
