CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES

How can we make videos a more enriching experience and
not  just a "day off' ?
Submitted by Dr. Shelia Bobo - Former Principal , EBC- East New York H.S.

Suggestions:

1. Create a list of all videos available in each department with suggestions
for incorporating them in the various courses.

2. Create a department policy on the use of videos which incorporates
these  best practices:

  • Motivate the video with a short discussion.
  •  Provide explanatory notes or focus questions on the board or on a
    handout to guide student viewing.
  • Encourage students to take notes while they view the film to be used
for a purpose, e.g., answering questions, writing a report or essay, etc.
  • Stop the film periodically to invite discussion.
  • Leave a few minutes before the end of the lesson for a summary.
